Well then. Discuss? This is from PornHub. Thanks to r/mapporn.

  1. Hmm. Interesting, I guess.

What would be more interesting is, instead of just showing what kind of porn is most popular in each country, breaking out a lot more of the types of porn, including the non-“vanilla” types — most of the categories here aren’t especially controversial these days, although some used to be) and showing their relative popularity by country. As just one example, what countries BDSM is more or less popular in.

    • I’ll bet PornHub has the data available publicly. I’d check it out myself, but I don’t like the viruses that come from porn sites…

  2. Well, well, don’t let it be said that the Russkies don’t like anything from Japan then.

    • Anime is widely popular in Russia among people under 40 as well as cuisine (I always make fun of local restaurants having sushi and rolls even though the closest sea is 800 miles away) and video games (both arcades back in the day and consoles now). And I’m not touching the cars and other electronics obviously.
      Cheers from Urals!

  3. Conclusions: virtual porn is very Western, and the only countries we really learn about from this chart are the ones with the luxury to not just search for their own nationality/ethnicity; also, that porn viewers have a strong preference for performers that look like them. That makes sense. At the very least, the people on screen will look more like the people you fantasize about in real life.
Good timing with the Matt Walsh debate.

    • On the surface I think you’re absolutely correct, Bill, but I think there’s more to it than that. Were you able to check out Katrien Jacobs’ essay on Chinese porn preferences? (It was in a nightcap from a few weeks ago.) What if the Chinese obsession with Japanese porn is about power or revenge? Or censorship or top-down attempts to enforce neo-Confucian mores?

What if the porn preferences of Africans and Arabs are racist? And the West’s obsession with lesbian porn?

  4. I never could relate to my straight-male friends’ propensity for drooling over woman-on-woman porn, even when they’d say it had to do with twice the ‘eye candy’ per pic.

To me, it meant exclusion (‘no chance, man’).

Please keep it civil
