No really, I’ve got to get back to work. But before I do…
1) On gun control: I think supporting gun freedom ought to be more of a Dem issue than GOP. Who *really* needs a gun? Unprotected minorities. Also, I like this quote: “However, people with evil ideas or intentions will always be able to circumvent any law that we impose. That is the very definition of an outlaw.”
2) Absolutely! When I was out there I figured the split would be NorCal, SoCal, and the Valley. But that’s probably a bit too simple (given, e.g. Santa Cruz and Mountain View being in the same region). I don’t know if anyone’s done research on this, but I’m guessing the holdouts will be rural voters who assume they are getting subsidies from the cities and I don’t know if they’re right.
2b) Re: the comments in your old post. There’s an issue of tragedy of the commons by diffusing political power (same applies to term limits). If I’m the sole stationary bandit, I have incentive to allow my subjects to be more productive. If I have to split the booty with another bandit then I have less incentive to be forward looking. But that argument cuts both ways; on the state level a smaller jurisdiction would likely be a good thing (though I can think of possible exceptions).
3-7) I’ve added this post to my ReadItLater list and will presumably return to it in the next several years.
